Innovation and Chaos

In high-tech businesses, innovation is crucial. To nurture this element of success, Tom Hardy believes design managers must create an environment in which there is a creative tension between a shared vision--stability--and open-ended risk-taking--instability. While the approach might not generate immediate quarterly earnings, Hardy is convinced this balancing act, which integrates input from many sources, will result in long-term value through the development of distinctive products that are strategic leaders in their markets.
